We Don't Need Permission to Learn

There is a move you have been trying to learn for months. You ask someone at a jam. They say, "That one is private." You find a tutorial and hit a paywall before the breakdown. Or you get told to DM for details and never hear back.

If that made you feel small, it was not your fault. It was the system working exactly as designed.

You Have Seen This Pattern Before

This is not one protective artist making one weird choice. It is a repeated pattern across the scene.

Beginner questions get routed to paid workshops. Tutorials stop right before the useful part. Real answers happen in private chats. New techniques stay inside friend circles until the social value is gone.

Then it spills into opportunity. Who hears about the audition first. Who gets introduced to the promoter. Who lands the collab. It is usually the same people because access travels through the same network.

That is gatekeeping. Not the internet buzzword. The real thing.

This Is About Position, Not Craft

Most people doing this would not call themselves gatekeepers. They call it context, standards, sustainability, or protecting the art. Sometimes those reasons are real. They still do not explain the outcome.

In a tight community, knowledge is status. If I know the thing you do not, I hold leverage. That gap turns into followers, bookings, and authority. Sharing closes the gap. Hoarding protects it.

It is not about protecting the craft. It is about protecting your position in it.

Open communities evolve faster because more people can test, refine, and improve the same ideas. Closed communities slow down because everyone is solving in private and repeating each other.

Hoarding feels strategic in the short term. It is a dead end in the long term.

When "DM Me" Really Means "Pay First"

Some tutorial libraries charge monthly for beginner material: isolations, timing, hand paths, basic mechanics. That is not advanced coaching. That is charging entry for vocabulary.

There is a difference between charging for your time and charging for baseline information. Workshops, private coaching, and custom feedback are paid work. Basic public learning material should be public.

When foundational knowledge is monetized first, the people with the least money get pushed out first. Talent does not decide who stays. Cash does.

What an Open Learning Standard Actually Looks Like

People hear "open" and assume "chaotic." It is the opposite. Open systems can be strict as hell. They are just strict in public.

    Publish fundamentals in full

    No teaser tutorials that cut before the useful part. If it is foundational, it is fully explained.

    Separate free knowledge from paid labor

    Public tutorials are free. Personalized coaching, custom feedback, choreography, and deep programs are paid services.

    Document naming and progressions

    If three scenes use three names for the same mechanic, beginners lose months. Shared naming is not bureaucracy, it is mercy.

    Reward contributors in public

    Credit, links, and visibility should be explicit. Open does not mean anonymous. It means traceable.

That is not anti-teacher. It is anti-bottleneck.

The Informal Gate Hits Just as Hard

Not all gatekeeping is financial. A lot of it is social.

If access depends on being in the right room with the right people at the right time, you do not have an open scene. You have an inner circle with a waiting room.

Good intentions do not cancel system outcomes. A closed loop is still a closed loop.

The informal gate does as much damage as the paid one. It is just harder to screenshot.

What You Can Do This Week

You do not need a platform launch, funding round, or committee vote to start fixing this.

Record one clean tutorial on a foundational move. Post it where anyone can see it. Add clear tags so beginners can find it by search, not by friend group.

If you run events, publish open criteria for workshops and showcases. Write the process down. Kill the private referral maze.

If you teach, keep charging for coaching and feedback. Just stop paywalling basic vocabulary like it is proprietary software.

If someone asks for help and you can answer in thirty seconds, answer in public once instead of in private twenty times.

Systems change when repeated behavior changes. This is repeated behavior.

What This Is Not

This is not a call to stop paying teachers. Good teachers should be paid better than they are now.

This is not a call to erase authorship. Credit matters. Attribution matters. Lineage matters.

This is a call to stop pretending that beginner access has to be scarce for experts to survive. It does not.

Paid depth and free fundamentals can coexist. They already do in healthier education ecosystems.

If This Hits a Nerve, Sit With That

You can and should charge for labor: lessons, coaching, choreography, live instruction, and real feedback. That is skilled work.

This post is about something else. It is about paywalling fundamentals, gatekeeping names, and turning shared vocabulary into private leverage.

There is a line between fair compensation and extraction. This scene crossed it years ago.

We are drawing that line again, in public, and we are not backing off it.

If you know something useful, publish it where a beginner can actually find it. That is how scenes get stronger.
